Competition Brief & Overview
Students are challenged to examine the materials, assemblies, and methods that make architecture possible—elements often concealed or overlooked once a building is complete. The competition asks participants to bring these 'figures of architecture' into focus and reconsider their role through the lens of climate resilience and adaptation. Participants can respond through either a Built stream (1:1 installation or prototype focusing on materials, components, or methods of making) or a Digital stream (one still visual and statement exploring climate adaptation at a broader scale). The goal is to investigate how architecture can adapt, protect, perform, repair, transform, respond, and endure through thoughtful design. Selected work will be exhibited during DesignTO Festival 2027, with prizes, fabrication support, and public recognition awarded across both streams.
Eligibility & Target Participants
Students studying architecture and related spatial design disciplines across Ontario. Entries may be submitted individually or as a team. Built stream entrants must be able to fabricate, transport, deliver, install, and remove their project at the exhibition venue within the required competition schedule. Entries located within the Greater Toronto Area are more suitable for the Built stream.

$10 CAD entry fee required upon submission for all competition entries (both Built and Digital streams)
Total Prize Fund:
Built Stream: Three finalists receive $500 CAD fabrication budget each, plus additional prize money: 1st Place $150 CAD, 2nd Place $100 CAD, 3rd Place $50 CAD. Digital Stream: 1st Place $300 CAD, 2nd Place $150 CAD, 3rd Place $75 CAD. People's Choice Awards: Built $100 CAD, Digital $100 CAD. Winners receive official award titles, founding membership package to Paloe platform, publication and feature on Paloe website, submission to DesignTO for publication consideration, publicity and exposure through Paloe, DesignTO, and competition-related media and social coverage, and presentation during the final public exhibition at DesignTO Festival 2027 (January 25-29, 2027).
